9,800+cases in DR Congo since May; 4,700+ deaths

The Ebola outbreak centred on the Democratic Republic of Congo is approaching 10,000 cases. Congo's health ministry has recorded more than 9,800 cases and more than 4,700 deaths since the outbreak began in May, the deadliest in the country's history.

Responders continue to face violence. The World Health Organization said a nurse was killed and another health worker badly injured in an attack while answering an Ebola alert in Tshopo province over the weekend.

Nigeria's first patient in this outbreak, a Swiss citizen who had travelled to Uganda, was flown from Abuja to Switzerland on Monday for further treatment. Her husband is in isolation without symptoms. Nigerian officials are monitoring 52 contacts and say the country now has no active cases. How she was infected is still under investigation.

Uganda, which says it is free of Ebola, now requires citizens returning from Congo to quarantine for 21 days and has stepped up screening at airports and land borders. Kenya, which has reported nine cases and two deaths, released its first group of contacts from quarantine.
