57M+ballots cast before Election Day

Americans are voting on Tuesday in midterm elections that will decide which party controls Congress for the last two years of President Donald Trump's second term.

Every one of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives is on the ballot, along with 35 Senate seats, including special elections in Florida and Ohio. Voters in 36 states are also choosing governors, and there are thousands of state and local races and ballot measures on issues such as taxes, abortion and voting rules.

Republicans hold a narrow House majority and control the Senate 53 to 47. Democrats would need a net gain of four Senate seats to take control of that chamber, because Vice President JD Vance can break ties in Republicans' favor. Many nonpartisan forecasters see Democrats as favored to win the House, with the Senate seen as a closer contest.

Interest is high. More than 57 million ballots had already been cast in early and mail voting as of Monday, well above the roughly 44.5 million cast early in the 2022 midterms. Polls show voters most concerned about prices and the economy, and about the war with Iran.

The first polls close at 6 p.m. Eastern time in parts of Indiana and Kentucky, and the last close in Alaska at 1 a.m. Eastern. Officials have cautioned that counting in close races, especially in states with many mail ballots or ranked-choice voting, could take days. This is a developing story.
